Marimekko

One of my favorite Finnish designers for textiles is Marimekko, and I am pleased to feature many of their beautiful patterns in the cabins.

Marimekko is a Finnish design house founded in 1951. Striped, checked, and floral prints in bold colors make up a rich artistic legacy. Over the years, Marimekko designers have created some 3,500 print designs, which have graced everything from dresses and bags to ceramics, fabrics, notecards, and more. Proving their timeless appeal, the iconic prints have been reborn again and again in thousands of imaginative color palettes.

When founding Marimekko in the early 1950s, Armi Ratia (1912-1979) created one of the world’s first lifestyle brands. She had a remarkable ability to capture the spirit of her time, presenting the world with her much-welcomed vision for optimism and personal joy. The journey began with a simple dress in captivating prints, which was an instant classic. Over the years, the Marimekko dress has remained an empowering uniform for independent women everywhere, always current yet true to its original concept.

One of the most influential artists in the company’s success was Maija Isola (1927-2001), head designer and creator of more than 500 patterns, including Unikko, the still popular poppy pattern that has become the trademark of Marimekko.

Marimekko’s Helsinki headquarters and bustling printing factory is where the celebrated Marimekko prints come to life. Over 1 million yards of fabric are printed in the Marimekko printing mill every year.

The bright, smart designs fit well with the rustic charm of log cabins, and add a bit of Finnish flair.

This new Marimekko pattern is designed to be reminiscent of the carved logs used to build Finnish sauna cabins.
