A place for Finns

About six years ago I joined the Finnish Center Association (FCA) in southeast Michigan and have been getting my “Finn on” ever since. What a joy to congregate with fellow Finns and share the wonderful foods and traditions of Finland. And not surprisingly, many people’s surnames have a lot of double consonants in them like mine!

At FCA you’ll find pasty and pulla making and sales, Scandinavian markets, music, library, gift shop and many social opportunities. All the major Finnish holidays are celebrated including:

🇫🇮 Vappu: one of Finland’s biggest festivals, celebrated annually on May 1 to mark the end of winter

🇫🇮 Juhannus (pronounced YOU-ha-nus): the celebration of the summer solstice, or midsummer, between the 20th and 26th of June.

🇫🇮 Finnish Independence Day: Dec. 6 each year to celebrate Finland’s declaration of independence from the Russian empire

I am currently co-chair of FCA and am also becoming involved in Finlandia Foundation National, which champions Finnish culture across the United States. If you are of Finnish heritage, I highly recommend becoming involved in these groups and supporting their missions. Preserving culture and imparting its traditions and wisdom to the next generation are worthy endeavors.
