Tossut

My mom used to call them “morning slippers” or “tossut,” which, of course, is “slippers” in Finnish.

When I found this beautiful felted pair on my recent trip to Lapland, the tag immediately made me smile. I remembered the word and all the memories of warmth and home that it conjured up in my mind.

Tossut (pronounced duss-oot) come in all shapes, colors and styles, and I’ve had my share over the years. Some have hard soles and are suitable for short treks to the mailbox or late-night dog walks. My favorites though have been more like wooly socks and fleece booties that keep your toes warm and comfortable and are a relaxing break from the sturdy shoes of everyday life.

After a day of work and running about, there is nothing better than slipping out of your heels or oxfords and slipping into the comfort of your favorite tossut. It’s the same wonderful feeling as slipping out of your hiking boots on a backpacking trip and into your camp shoes, usually a comfy sandal or moccasin.

And the best part is they travel. I always carry my favorite tossut with me on work trips and vacations. It’s a simple way to bring a little of home with you.
