The minnow creek

Just north of the cabins is a small creek that spills into Otter Lake that has always been a loved feature of the property.

About 3 feet wide, it can easily be jumped, but two crossing bridges are also provided for the less limber explorers. In years past, old wood minnow boxes (live wells) were kept on the west side of the creek to house bait, primarily minnows, for fishing. Because of this the creek has hence been known as “the minnow creek.”

It could also be called Frog Creek because the little, leaping amphibians are plentiful in and around the quick moving stream! When you cross, you’ll always see or hear frogs and toads of all shapes and sizes scrambling out of the way. The creek is a draw for kids, always in search of these elusive green friends.

On the banks of the creek are beautiful wildflowers, including the bright yellow marsh marigolds in spring and the dainty white arrowhead and daisy fleabane later in summer.

The water in the creek is crystal clear and cold, and fast moving, especially in the spring when the snowmelt travels down from the hills above. It is relaxing to listen to the water cascading down and all the life it supports.
