Blooming

It’s the first holiday weekend of summer. In the western Upper Peninsula, the trees finally have their leaves again with some maples still lagging behind as their buds are just about to burst. The white serviceberries are in full bloom along roadsides, as is Michigan’s state flower, the apple blossom, some of the area’s earliest flowering trees.

Forget-me-nots, on of my favorite spring flowers, are popping up everywhere. Their small delicate blooms in pale blues, pinks and whites symbolize true love and memories, reminding us to keep hope and never forget the ones we love.

It’s fitting to see these blooms as we remember the men and women who have died in service to our country and adorn their graves on Memorial Day.
