Don’t miss Plaidurday
Bugsy Sailor, a Baraga native, is a web developer and marketer and the Official Unofficial Ambassador of the Upper Peninsula (his self-proclaimed title). Sailor developed Plaidurday, which has been a thing since 2011, as a way to bring together all the wonderful plaid-wearing people of the world, including many proud Yoopers who wear plaid with pride.
Many of Bugsy’s projects are inspired by the region, including the popular 9-0-6 Day, which celebrates the U.P. and its area code on Sept. 6 each year.
In 2019 he began a project to watch and photograph every sunrise of the year. What started as Year of the Sunrise has grown into life of the sunrise. To date he has photographed 1,371 consecutive sunrises, primarily from the shores of Lake Superior.
In his own words:
Along the way, sunrise has slowed my approach to life, stretched my heart, introduced me to love, given spirit to my days, navigated me through a global pandemic, and has given witness to more beauty than I can express. There have been -35º windchills, downpours, thunderstorms, and blizzards, but no matter how gray the day, the sun still rises.
Photographs have been the tangible output of these sunrise years, but it has never been about the photos. It has always been about the wind on my face, the sand between my toes, and feeling the sunrise in nature while being present in life.
I admire this guy’s creativity and ability to bring an idea to life. We need more of this in the world.
